The Billiards and Snooker Federation of India
(BSFI) is the apex body overseeing the growth and development of cue
sports (Billiards, Snooker, Pool & Carom) in India. The Federation
took root in the year 1926.
Even though this is the only sport that has given a healthy number of
world titles to country, the progress has been stymied by the popular
notion that the game is elitist in nature and is the prerogative of the
affluent class. Because of such a mindset, bravura performances of our
champions have failed to spur the youngsters to follow a career in
billiards and snooker.
The Federation, since inception, in order to make cue sports more
appealing vis-à-vis other games in India, has undertaken a number of
promotional activities including training and coaching camps,
identifying budding talent and sponsoring them for various regional
state, national and international events.
The Federation also ropes in living legends of the game like Michael
Ferreira, Geet Sethi, Ashok Shandilya, Yasin Merchant etc, to advise on
the present format of the game and to suggest improvements to make the
game more spectator friendly.
The efforts of the federation has started paying off with the sport
able to catch the fancy of the masses courtesy the recent dazzling
performances of prodigies like Pankaj Advani. The media too, for a
change, has started to provide substantial coverage to billiards and
other cue sports. The Billiards and Snooker Federation of India, the
apex body, needs to play a proactive role in popularizing the game.
Spurred by recent achievements in the world stage, a number of State
Billiards Associations have made ardent efforts to tap the abundant
talent pool in the country and sponsoring them to attend various
training and coaching camps being conducted in association with state
federations, across India.
The Billiards & Snooker Federation of India is accredited to:
a) Indian Olympic Association
b) Asian Confederation of Billiards Sports
